Is Microsoft ready for the next surge?

A guest post from my dear blogger friend Adesh. Adesh writes an excellent blog and is a passionate advocate of customer service. Seeing my blog dry up because I'm traveling and not online, he very kindly offered this guest post - a gesture that has truly touched me. Adesh - I really owe you one. Here is his post.

There was a statement few days’ back which I got my attention today. Prominent person who has done extremely well in his field made it. However, the statement showed that they are trying to change things and trying to make sure his organization do not lose race to others in this cutthroat competitive world.

Statement came from Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

“It is a competitive business; it’s always been. There’s nothing really new about that. You can list our past competitors and those made for a lot of good news articles that Microsoft was on its last legs. We would not want to deny anyone the opportunity of denying those articles. Again and again and again.”

This statement does bring some kind of air of arrogance with it but at the same time makes it clear that Microsoft knows it cannot takes things lightly as competition is catching up with them fast.

Microsoft is struggling as its competitors are trying to change the rules of game and Microsoft has to play this new game according to rules established by its competitors.

Apple came out with blockbuster products like iPod and iPhone, which in turn also made people lapping up their Macs. Microsoft tried to counter them by launching Zune but it turned out to be a dud. Now Microsoft is trying hard to counter the attack posed by resurgent Apple. They are coming up with advertisements, which show that Apple laptops are costly than PC. But will this work; we have to wait to know the results.

Apple is not the only one who is threatening the dominance of Microsoft. Their other nemesis is Google. This Internet giant is putting its money on Internet based applications and challenging Microsoft’s business model, which is to have software and applications installed on PC. Only time will tell how robust Google’s new business model is but it surely has caught Microsoft off guard as it has agreed to give its Microsoft Office product free online.

With Yahoo! Search in Microsoft’s pocket, intentions of Microsoft are clear that it is ready for long haul. Good thing is that Bill Gates is not taking competition easy. Hopefully we will continue to see more innovation from company, which gave us Operating system and Office suite.

wow that was a touching gesture indeed.. way to go Adesh!
as far as the 10 year deal between MS and Yahoo goes, its wait and watch to see if they usurp what Google gave us in the form of search engines..
wont it be funny to say 'i yahooed /binged it instead of saying i googled it'

Great post Adesh ... this fight according to me is one sided .. MS is a sore loser right now .... the new iPhone 3G(S) will be easy to buy for anyone probably in about 6 mos..... Jobs vision that Apple would be available for any user will be reality soon ....Apple will rule ....at least for the next few years ... noone wants a Zune ... they wait for the next generation of the iPod ....like TFT said ...admire your gesture !!

@ Ramesh - For a wonderful person like you this is least I can do. Thanks for putting this up.
@AJCL - Actually Microsoft trying promote 'Binged' as verb heavily. Let's see whether people do it or not.
@ LEB - Apple is one hell of a great company. I need to stop here else as an Apple fan I will sway in emotions and continue to write non-stop ;-)

Great post. Apple and Google seem to be more innovative than Microsoft. The competition has never been so fierce for MS. It would be interesting to see how the competition develops.

Well frankly...Microsoft true nemesis is the FOSS, free and open source software, that includes Linux, Google, Mozilla and thousands of others.
What Microsoft did with Netscape cannot be neglected and they are feeling backlash of their arrogance and pride.
Microsoft is also now challenging online-enterprise market, but however I am pretty sure people will Google more than Bing it..

Btw...BING means But Its Not Google..:P

Thanks Hang. I agree competition has never been so fierce for Microsoft.

@ Sid - But its Not Google is an interesting one.

In today's competitive world, the world which is connected thro' web, MS cannot hold their leadership position anylonger unless they go in for a major rejig. I guess this move is in the right direction else MS may have to make way for others to rule the market. Innovation is the KEY to success in todays open market!!!

@Sid- But its not google- well said, well said..

I agree with Sid. MS's greatest enemy is Free and Open Source Software.

MS is a loser right from the beginning. It is just a company that made it big in business because the likes of Google were not around. I think MS's competitors will continue to define its business hereafter!

I think the way Google's moving we'll really have to see how much challenge it can offer to MS in its space that is OS space because we are already seeing google's search engine slipping in terms of accuracy of its result as Google's moving away from its fundamental area...and the way Google is moving its just the same way MS moved a decade back trying its hand in all the pies but not creating a 'killer' products like Apple's doing...
MS is feeling more heat due the global slow down as well with enterprises thinking about cutting IT expenditure.... this where FOSS community is making a headway but FOSS was always there what I am thinking is they should not go the Sun way the biggest champion of FOSS...
All in all a very good article Adesh I must say...
